It was with some trepidation that we approached the prospect of building our own home. How big is building your own house? Scary!...... Building horror stories are legion. We unearthed a local builder who had nice blue vans. Our first step was to contact him and things went remarkably smoothly. He took us through from start to finish: the complete package.

We have used Stephen Gardiner on two occasions to build houses for us. On both occasions we have been delighted with the exceptionally high standard of his staff and of the high quality of their trademanship. He built an award winning timber clad colonial house for us and also converted a listed church to a 4 bed family home.

Building a house with Stephen Gardiner is a new and very refreshing experience. In 22 weeks he built our 2,800 sq. ft. timber-framed house, standing on a solid concrete platt, together with a stable block for four horses, all done through the winter months with no detriment to the fabric of the building.

The process throughout, form cutting the first sod of ground to handing over the keys, was one of informed discussion, ensuring that we got everything just as we wanted it. Nothing was too much trouble. His efficiency meant that no time was lost - the right members of his team were on site at just the right moment when that particular trade was needed, to progress the job as smoothly as possible. The result was a house which was home the moment we walked through the door, and we have had no problems with it since.

The day he finished the contract we stood outside the house we had so wanted to build, and saw it as one of the great experiences of our lives. Our words to him were:'With you as the builder, we would do this all over again any day.' And we meant it.

After buying a building site in Auchterarder I had to decide whether to self build or employ a builder. The first option would have been less expensive but the downside would have been the hassle of managing the project while holding down a full time job. I felt the best way to keep my sanity and get the house built before I became too old to enjoy it was to use a builder. After asking around and looking at other houses he had built I approached Stephen Gardiner and agreed a price and a build programme. What impressed me in addition to the build quality, which I had already checked out, was the commitment to the completion of the job on the agreed timescale at the agreed price. I bought the site in August, approvals were granted in December, the building work started in February and the keys handed over in the July.

I have no reservations when it comes to recommending Stephen. Fair price, high quality, easy to deal with and an awareness of the importance of customer satisfaction and reputation make him someone I would go back to.
